She graduated from The Illawarra Grammar School in 2012 and moved to Brisbane at the age of 18 to train with Vince Raleigh at the Chandler Aquatic Centre in 2014.McKeon switched coaches again in 2015 and began training with Michael Bohl, first at Brisbane's St Peters Western Swimming Club, before moving to Griffith University on the Gold Coast in 2017 to earn a bachelor's degree in public health and health promotion with a major in nutrition.

McKeon competed in the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics held in Singapore. She earned gold in the girls' 4 × 100-meter medley relay, silver in the 100 metre freestyle and mixed 4 × 100 metre freestyle relay, and bronze in the 50-metre freestyle, 200-metre freestyle, and mixed 4 × 100 metre medley relay.

McKeon was chosen to represent Australia at the 2016 Summer Olympics, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her brother David was also chosen, making the pair the first brother and sister to compete in an Olympic Games for Australia since John and Ilsa Konrads in 1960.

McKeon earned a silver medal in the 4 × 100-meter freestyle relay at the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain in 2013. She competed in the heats of the 4 × 100 metre medley relay and 4 × 200-meter freestyle relay, assisting Australia in reaching the final and winning silver medals in both events.

McKeon earned a gold and two silver medals at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. She earned gold as the anchor leg for the Australian team in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay final with a 51.90 time. 

McKeon won a silver medal in the 4×100 meter medley relay final, swimming the butterfly leg in 56.44 seconds and finishing in 3:53.37. In the mixed 4 × 100 m medley relay prelims, she won a silver medal for swimming the butterfly leg in 56.70 seconds.

McKeon won gold in the final and set a new World Championships record with a time of 23.04. McKeon swam the butterfly leg of the women's 4 × 50-metre medley relay preliminary heat in a split of 23.23 and qualified first for the final with an overall time of 1:44.78. She swam the butterfly leg again in a time of 24.43.

Her efforts helped Australia win the gold medal, and her overall time of 1:42.35 set a new world short-course record.McKeon won silver in the women's 4 × 100 metre medley relay with a butterfly split of 53.93 and an overall timing of 3:44.92.
