Nikki had an outstanding high school career, winning numerous state championships and setting school records in the 800 and 1600 meters. Their high school performance attracted the attention of college recruiters.

Nikki was actively looked for by various institutions as a result of her outstanding high school performance. They first attended the University of Oregon, a collegiate track and field powerhouse, before transferring to the University of Arkansas. This move was an important moment in their sporting careers, presenting them with advanced training and competing options.

Hiltz signed with Adidas in 2018 and trained with The Mission Athletics Club, currently known as The Golden Coast Track Club in California, after running a 1500 m time ranking in the top 100 in the world. She also finished 12th in the Bay Shore Hoka One Long Island Mile (4:39.23). Hiltz ranked 92nd in the world in the 1500 meters, with a personal best of 4:09.14.

Hiltz raced the mile in 4:24.45 at the Millrose Games, splitting a 1500-meter time of 4:07.09 and finishing fifth with an indoor personal best. Hiltz raced in the 1500-meter race at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in New York. Hiltz competed in both the 800 and 1500 meters in the 2021 United States Olympic Trials. They finished 13th in the 1500 m and 17th in the 800 m, falling out on the finals in both events.
